More than Uttered Words

“At noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon.  And at three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, My God, why have your forsaken me?”). ”

 – Mark 15:33-34

Imagine this:  A guy and girl meet and fall in love.  In this process they have a song that reminds them of eachother, and it constantly plays in their hearts.  Each time they hear it, their hearts fill with warmth for eachother.

As time goes by, they grow old together.  Times arn’t always smooth sailing, but they hold onto the bond of love, until one day, the man is laying on his death bed, without the strength to move.  Beside him, his wife holds his hand as he fades in and out of conciousness.  With every ounce of strength that he has, he wispers in her ear one simple line from their song.

A few words spoken out loud.  Hundreds of words spoken directly to the heart.  How much do these simple words remind the wife of the love they shared throughout their life.

In the same way, Christ uttered the words of a song.  “My God, My God, why have you forsaken me”  These were not just the last words He spoke, but a reminder to all of those standing there before him, and all of those that scattered and fled, of the Psalm of David (Psalm 22).

He was reminding them of his Love for us, you and me.  Let us not forget it.

Unconditional Love

In the past couple weeks i’ve been struggling with the concept of Unconditional Love.  A Love that, no matter what happens, will always be there.  We may not want it, or feel like we deserve it, but it is given freely to us because God is who He is.

Part of my struggle has been with certain people.  Situations come up where i feel like it would be much easier to turn and walk away from certain people all together, hating them for what they have done, but because of God’s example of Love towards us, i cannot consciously not love them.

God has called us not only to live among this world, but he calls us to live above it, with standards that exceed the worlds expectations.  In this He calls us to Love those who are difficult to love, our enemies, our friends, our roommates, strangers, outcasts, criminals with the same unconditional love that he showed to us when he died upon the cross.

When it becomes difficult to Love, do so anyways.  Be kind and compassionate to all those you encounter.  Dont try to find loopholes around loving, because in the teaching of Jesus, there are none.

God Bless and PEACE
